Dark Elf - Staff - Heavy - Conjurer - Mage

Background

A few who understand the complexity of the battles that rage between the planes of Oblivion and Nirn have taken up a dangerous path, entering into pacts to turn evil against evil. These daring conjurers are malconvokers, and they bargain with their lives.

Best played on Adept or lower difficulty as playing this on Legendary had the Flaming Familiar doing 12 instead of 50 damage. The Necromancer's Ritual spell was very good though as 60 Health and Magicka every time the two familiars explode keeps you alive by dealing damage.


Weapons

A Staff of Thunderbolts as a backup weapon in case you run out of magicka. I made a Daedric Staff of Thunderbolt. Unchanted staves can be bought from Master Neloth at Tel Mirthyn on Solstheim and then made on a Staff Enchanter. You can use either the one in Tel Mithryn or at the player homes of Bloodchill Manor or Myrwatch. You also need 4 Heartstones and need to know the Thunderbolt spell to craft it.


Armor

Any heavy armor at the start of the game and then a Jade and Emerald Circlet, Her Hand Armor, Her Hand Boots and Her Hand Gauntlets.

Read the journal in the first room on the right of the lower floor in the Temple in Raven Rock Solstheim. This starts the quest chain that will allow you to craft and/or acquire the armour from slain enemies.


Spells

Utility spells from Alteration. Flame Atronach, Flaming Familiar and Necromancer's Ritual from Conjuration. Shock spells from Destruction. Healing spells from Restoration.


Standing Stones

The Lord Stone for 50 armor rating (6% damage reduction) and 25% magic resistance.


Shrines

Talos 20% quicker shout cooldown.


Shouts

Slow Time (Time - Sand - Eternity)

Location: Hag’s End, Korvanjund (The Jagged Crown), Labyrinthian (The Staff of Magnus).

Slows time down for you a bit and everyone else a lot. Can be used to get multiple very quick spells in.

Whirlwind Sprint (Whirlwind - Fury - Tempest)

Location: Dead Men’s Respite, Volskygge, High Hrothgar (The Way of the Voice)

Use to reach otherwise inaccessible places and to quickly evade attacks or catch up with fleeing enemies.


Character Creation

Female Dark Elf

Breton, Dark Elves and High Elves come out joint first with a 25/35 skill point boost. I went with Dark Elf for the looks and the fire resistance.

Pick female as the sex for your character as there are more male humanoids than females to fight in Skyrim so the 10% damage bonus against the opposite sex from Agent of Dibella gets more use. All Dwemer Automatons count as Male.

The Flaming Familiar spell is acquired in High Gate Ruins which is west along the coastline from Dawnstar. It an integral part of the build as it it allows you to regenerate health and magicka while dealing damage thanks to the Necromancers Ritual spell. You can buy the latter spell from Phinis Gestor at the College of Winterhold with at least a Conjuration level of 40, as it’s an Adept level spell.

Distribute attributes at a ratio of 1 / 1 / 0. At level 56 which is required for all the perks the attributes are:

Alteration

Spell Level Description
Candlelight Novice Creates a hovering light that lasts for 60 seconds.
Detect Life Adept Nearby living creatures, but not undead, machines or daedra, can be seen through walls
Telekinesis Adept Can pull an object to you from distance. Add it to your inventory or throw it
Waterbreathing Adept Can breathe under water for 60 seconds. Stand in water and cast to level Alteration.

From the Bow of Shadows quest that you get from the steward in Dragonsreach you can get the Detect Life spell book at the stables once you have read the ledger in Acradia's Cauldron. Cast this in the market during the day to level Alteration.


Conjuration

Spell Level Description
Conjure Familiar Novice Summons a Familiar for 60 seconds wherever the caster is pointing
Conjure Flame Atronach Apprentice Summons a Flame Atronach for 60 seconds wherever the caster is pointing
Flaming Familiar Apprentice Summons a flaming familiar which will charge into battle and explode
Soul Trap Apprentice If a target dies within 60 seconds, fills a soul gem
Necromancer’s Ritual Adept Regain 30 health and magicka every time a friendly conjured or reanimated minion dies for 120 seconds

Use Soul Trap to fill soul gems, which can help recharge the Staff, and is a quick way to level Conjuration.


Destruction

Spell Level Description
Flames Novice A gout of fire inflicting a base damage of 8 points of fire damage per second
Sparks Novice Lightning that does 8 points of shock damage to Health and Magicka per second
Lightning Bolt Apprentice A bolt of lightning that does 25 points of shock damage to Health and half that to Magicka.
Chain Lightning Adept Lightning bolt that does 40 points of shock damage to Health and half to Magicka, then leaps to a new target.
Thunderbolt Expert A Thunderbolt that does 60 points of shock damage to Health and half that to Magicka.
Lightning Storm Master Target takes 75 points of shock damage per second to Health, and half that to Magicka.

Use progressively better shock spells as you acquire the Destruction perks to reduce their costs.


Illusion

Spell Level Description
Courage Novice Target won't flee for 60 seconds, and gets some extra health and stamina.

Courage can be used to level illusion by casting it at an NPC.


Restoration

Spell Level Description
Healing Novice Heals the caster 10 points per second
Fast Healing Apprentice Heals caster by 50 points
Close Wounds Adept Heals caster by 100 points
Grand Healing Expert Heals everyone close to the caster 200 points. Does not affect atronachs, machines or undead

Enchantments

The effects listed below are based upon 100 Enchanting skill, all the enchanting perks in the build and with a set of enchanted crafting gear. Read my guide on making crafting gear if you are not familiar with it.

With the Sallowed Regent Black Book the magnitude of all enchantments can be increased. Please note that Black Books can only be used on Solstheim.

The magnitude of the enchantments can be further increased by equipping 4 pieces of Azhidal's gear.


Alchemy

All the details for the potions and poisons are based on having all the listed alchemy perks, Alchemy at 100 and a set of crafting gear.

Potion of Fortify Health

Ingredients Blue Mountain Flower, Lavender & Wheat
Effects Fortify Health Health is increased by 170 points for 60 seconds
Fortify Conjuration Conjuration spells last 213% longer
Restore Health Restores 266 points of Health

You can get all the Blue Mountain Flowers you need in Whiterun. The two farms to the east of Whiterun also get you all the Wheat you need.


Potion of Fortify Destruction

Ingredients Glowing Mushrooms, Snowberries & Steel-Blue Entoloma
Effects Fortify Destruction Destruction spells are 213% stronger for 60 seconds
Resist Frost Resists 128% of frost damage for 60 seconds
Resist Shock Resists 128% of shock damage for 60 seconds

All 7 Glowing Mushrooms you need are in the secret lab at the farm. Go back to Helgen and take the path towards Ivarstead and gather all the Snowberries you need from there. Steel-Blue Entoloma are from Khajiit merchants. Plant some Glowing Mushrooms in the Garden at Tundra Homestead as that will get you some additional Glowing Mushrooms every 3 days to make more of this potion and also have enough for Smithing purposes.


Potion of Fortify Enchanting

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Stoneflower Petals & Snowberries
Effects Fortify Enchanting 85% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Stoneflower Petals are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Snowberries are abundant near Windhelm.


Potion of Fortify Smithing

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Gold Kanet & Glowing Mushrooms
Effects Fortify Smithing 213% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Gold Kanet are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Glowing Mushrooms are in Falmer caves.
