Skaal Windcaller

Nord - Staff - Clothing - Light - Conjurer - Mage

Background

The Windcallers, also known as the Blessed of the All-Maker are Skaal witches who adeptly invoke the winds. They are distinguished by delicate markings on their faces and are renowned for their creature companions.


Weapons

A Steel Staff enchanted with Chain Lightning as a backup should you run out of magicka. You can acquire and unenchanted one from Mater Neloth at Tel Mithryn. You need to know the Chain Lightning spell before you can make the staff and have a couple of Heart Stones as well.


Armor

Skaal Coat, Stalhrim Light Boots, Stalhrim Light Gauntlets, Nordic Circlet. The coat cannot be improved on a workbench but with the Lord Stone, a Fortify Light Armor enchantment and the boots and gauntlets improved via smithing this should get 77% damage reduction with the cap being 80%.

I’m not sure at what level Stalhrim gear starts appearing in Glover Mallory’s inventory, he’s the blacksmith in Raven Rock on Solstheim, but the at level 38 they were spawning for me. You can therefore buy them without progressing the Dragonborn DLC main story. Remember that you can reset both a marchant inventory and gold by doing a quick save, attack them and a quick load.

The Skaal Coat can be found on a dead Skaal by a tent near the lake next to Thirsk Mead Hall. A note on a barrel there also starts the quest for the Stahlrim Fur creation.


Spells

Destruction for shock and wind based frost spells, Conjuration for Familiars and bears, Restoration for heals and Alteration for utility spells.


Standing Stones

The Lord Stone for the 50 extra armour and 25% magic resistance. This helps bolster your defences and I got it early.


Shrines

Use a shrine of Talos for the 20% shout cooldown reduction.


Shouts

Cyclone (Wind - Unleash - Strike)

Location: Benkongerike, Kolbjorn Barrow (Unearthed), White Ridge Sanctum.

Can be used to knock multiple enemies to the ground that are in the path of the cyclone.

Call Storm (Storm – Wrath - Lightning)

Location: Forelhost, High Gate Ruins, Skuldafn Temple (The World-Eater’s Eyrie)

Summons a storm that does lightning bolt damage in an area. Only works outside.

Whirlwind Sprint (Whirlwind - Fury - Tempest)

Location: Dead Men’s Respite, Volskygge, High Hrothgar (The Way of the Voice)

Use to reach otherwise inaccessible places and to quickly evade attacks or catch up with fleeing enemies.


Character Creation

Female Nord

The Skaal are a tribe or Nords that live on Solstheim so Nord has to be picked for roleplay. They also have to be female as they are witches rather than warlocks.

Pick female as the sex for your character as there are more male humanoids than females to fight in Skyrim so the 10% damage bonus against the opposite sex from Agent of Dibella gets more use. All Dwemer Automatons count as Male.


Attribute Distribution

Distribute attributes at a ratio of 1 / 1 / 0. At level 53 which is required for all the perks the attributes are:

Alteration

Spell Level Description
Candlelight Novice Creates a hovering light that lasts for 60 seconds
Detect Life Adept Nearby living creatures, but not undead, machines or daedra, can be seen through walls
Telekinesis Adept Can pull an object to you from distance. Add it to your inventory or throw it
Waterbreathing Adept Can breathe under water for 60 seconds. Stand in water and cast to level Alteration.

From the Bow of Shadows quest that you get from the steward in Dragonsreach you can get the Detect Life spell book at the stables once you have read the ledger in Acradia's Cauldron. Cast this in the market during the day to level Alteration.


Conjuration

Spell Level Description
Conjure Familiar Apprentice Summons a familiar for 60 seconds wherever the caster is pointing.
Soul Trap Apprentice If a target dies within 60 seconds, fills a soul gem.
Pride of Hirstaang Expert Summon a Bear for 60 seconds wherever the caster is pointing. Resist 50% of frost damage for 60 seconds. Health regenerates 50% faster for 60 seconds.

Soul Trap is a good way to level conjuration. Just find a baby mudcrab and then spam the spell.


Destruction

Spell Level Description
Flames Novice A gout of fire inflicting a base damage of 8 points of fire damage per second.
Sparks Novice Lightning that does 8 points of shock damage to Health and Magicka per second.
Lightning Bolt Apprentice A bolt of lightning that does 25 points of shock damage to Health and half that to Magicka.
Chain Lightning Adept Lightning bolt that does 40 points of shock damage to Health and half to Magicka, then leaps to a new target.
Ice Storm Adept A freezing whirlwind that does 40 points of frost damage per second to Health and Stamina.
Thunderbolt Expert A Thunderbolt that does 60 points of shock damage to Health and half that to Magicka.
Unbounded Freezing Expert A freezing wind envelops the caster, knocking down nearby enemies and freezing them for 50 points of damage per second to Health and Stamina.
Blizzard Master Targets take 20 points of frost damage for 10 seconds, plus Stamina damage.
Lightning Storm Master Target takes 75 points of shock damage per second to Health, and half that to Magicka.

Use Unbounded Freezing and fast travelling to level Destruction. The spellbook can be found in Hob's Fall Cave.


Illusion

Spell Level Description
Courage Novice Target won't flee for 60 seconds, and gets some extra health and stamina.

Courage can be used to level illusion by casting it at an NPC.


Restoration

Spell Level Description
Healing Novice Heals the caster 10 points per second
Healing Hands Apprentice Heals the target 10 points per second, but not undead, atronachs, or machines
Fast Healing Apprentice Heals caster by 50 points
Close Wounds Adept Heals caster by 100 points
Grand Healing Expert Heals everyone close to the caster 200 points. Does not affect atronachs, machines or undead

Restoration is used for out of combat healing and potions are used in combat.

The effects listed below are based upon 100 Enchanting skill, all the enchanting perks in the build and with a set of enchanted crafting gear. Read my guide on making crafting gear if you are not familiar with it.

With the Sallowed Regent Black Book the magnitude of all enchantments can be increased. Please note that Black Books can only be used on Solstheim.

The magnitude of the enchantments can be further increased by equipping 4 pieces of Azhidal's gear.


Alchemy

All the details for the potions and poisons are based on having all the listed alchemy perks, Alchemy at 100 and a set of crafting gear.

Potion of Fortify Health

You can get all the Blue Mountain Flowers and Lavender you need in Whiterun. The two farms to the east of Whiterun also get you all the Wheat you need.


Potion of Restore Magicka

Effects Restore Magicka 266 points of magcika restored

Mora Tapinella and Red Mountain Flowers are found all over Skyrim.


Potion of Fortify Destruction

Ingredients Glowing Mushroom, Snowberries & Steel-Blue Entoloma
Effects Fortify Destruction 170% more damage for 60 seconds
Resist Frost 128% for 60 seconds
Resist Shock 128% for 60 seconds

All the glowing mushrooms you need are at the farm. Snowberries are from around Windhelm. Steel-Blue Entoloma are from Khajiit caravans


Potion of Fortify Enchanting

Effects Fortify Enchanting 85% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Stoneflower Petals are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Snowberries are abundant near Windhelm.


Potion of Fortify Smithing

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Gold Kanet & Glowing Mushrooms
Effects Fortify Smithing 213% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Gold Kanet are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Glowing Mushrooms are in Falmer caves.
