Beastmaster

Khajiit - Bow - Light - Heavy - Archer - Conjurer

Background

United in focus a Beastmaster works with beasts to fight the monstrous foes that threaten civilisation and the wilderness alike. They embody a friendship between the civilised races and the beasts of the world.


Weapons

Hunting Bow as soon as you can which is progressed to a Dragonbone Bow.


Armor

Leather scout armor as soon as you can as it’s the best light armor you can craft at the start of the game. Helm of Oreyn Bearclaw, Studded Dragonscale Armor, Dawnguard Light Gauntlets and Dawnguard Light Boots

The Helm of Oreyn Bearclaw can be found on a table in Gallows Hall, which is located just of Mara’s Eye pond near Windhelm. If you have Legacy of the Dragonborn mod then it’s located in the tower near Arcwind Point. This is heavy armor but is being used for the looks as well as giving a very nice boost to stamina and stamina regen. It’s not being tempered in the build but the damage reduction cap is met with the other armour pieces anyway.

Read the Crimson Dirks v4 in Candlehearth Hall in Windhelm to start the quest for the Studded Dragonscale Armor.

The Dawnguard light gauntlets and boots can be acquired in and on the battlements of Fort Dawnguard.

Purchase or craft a hunters backpack for an additional 10% bow damage and extra carrying capacity.


Spells

Alteration for utility spells, Conjuration for Conjure Familiar and later Pride of Hirstaang and Restoration for heals.


Standing Stones

Take the Lord Stone for 25% magic resistance and 50 extra armour.


Shrines

The Shrine of Kynareth should be taken for 25 extra stamina and because Kynareth is the Goddess of Nature.


Shouts

Animal Allegiance (Animal - Allegiance - Pack)

Location: Angarvunde, Ancient’s Ascent, Ysgrammor’s Tomb (Companions quest chain).

Can be used to call local animals to your aid. You don't need to complete the Companions factions quests to get the third word wall as if you go to Ysgramor's Tomb and follow it clockwise round the mountain until you see an iron ore vein. now head anti-clockwise round the mountain jumping up as often as you can. This gets you to the word wall.

Slow Time (Time - Sand - Eternity)

Location: Hag’s End, Korvanjund (The Jagged Crown), Labyrinthian (The Staff of Magnus)

Slows time down for you a bit and everyone else a lot. Can be used to get multiple very quick hits in.

Whirlwind Sprint (Whirlwind - Fury - Tempest)

Location: Dead Men’s Respite, Volskygge, High Hrothgar (The Way of the Voice)

Use to reach otherwise inaccessible places and to quickly evade attacks or catch up with fleeing enemies.


Character Creation

Female Khajiit

I decided to use a beast race for the beast master and with this being an Archery based build Khajiit seemed the better choice as they get a starting boost in Archery.

Pick female as the sex for your character as there are more male humanoids than females to fight in Skyrim so the 10% damage bonus against the opposite sex from Agent of Dibella gets more use. There are more male bandits than female and Dwemer automatons are all classed as male.

Join the Dawnguard and use an Armoured Troll as your follower. It’s only a few quests in to be able to get them. You can buy them as soon as Gunmar is at Fort Dawnguard. Use restoration spells to heal it in combat if needed. Be warned it goes off and attacks things nearby without waiting for you.

Alteration

Spell Level Description
Candlelight Novice Creates a hovering light that lasts for 60 seconds.
Detect Life Adept Nearby living creatures, but not undead, machines or daedra, can be seen through walls,
Telekinesis Adept Can pull an object to you from distance. Add it to your inventory or throw it.
Waterbreathing Adept Can breathe under water for 60 seconds.

Talk to the Steward in Dragonsreach to get a quest to investigate an assassination attemp on the Jarl. After reading the buiness ledger at Arcadia's Cauldron go the Whiterun Stables and on the body of a stablehand is a Detect Life sepllbook. This can be used to level Alteration. Cast this with both hands Until your magicka has run out as this will generate twice as much XP. Then your magicka has a chance to regenerate and repeat again.


Conjuration

Spell Level Description
Conjure Familiar Novice Summons a familiar for 60 seconds wherever the caster is pointing.
Soul Trap Apprentice If a target dies within 60 seconds, fills a soul gem.
Pride of Hirstaang Expert Summon a Bear for 60 seconds wherever the caster is pointing. Resist 50% of frost damage for 60 seconds. Health regenerates 50% faster for 60 seconds

Soul Trap is used to level Conjuration and also fill soul gems.


Destruction

Spell Level Description
Flames Novice A gout of fire inflicting a base damage of 8 points of fire damage per second.

Destruction spells are not used in the build.


Illusion

Spell Level Description
Courage Novice Target won't flee for 60 seconds, and gets some extra health and stamina.

Courage can be used to level illusion.


Restoration

Spell Level Description
Healing Novice Heals the caster 10 points per second.
Healing Hands Apprentice Heals the target 10 points per second, but not undead, atronachs, or machines.
Fast Healing Apprentice Heals caster by 50 points
Close Wounds Adept Heals caster by 100 points.
Grand Healing Expert Heals everyone close to the caster 200 points. Does not affect atronachs, machines or undead.

You can start using better healing spells as the cost reduction perks are acquired but I pretty much just used Healing and Fast Healing before getting enchanted gear.


Enchantments

The effects listed below are based upon 100 Enchanting skill, all the enchanting perks in the build and with a set of enchanted crafting gear. Read my guide on making crafting gear if you are not familiar with it.

Summary of combined effects

Bows do 225% more damage.
Conjuration and Restoration spells costs 46% less magicka.
Health, Magicka are increased by 115 points.
Stamina is increased by 185 points.
Stamina regenerates 20% faster.
Resist 37% of all magiic.
Resist 69% of fire damage.

With the Sallowed Regent Black Book the magnitude of all enchantments can be increased.

Please note that Black Books can only be used on Solstheim.

The magnitude of the enchantments can be further increased by equipping 4 pieces of Azhidal's gear.


Alchemy

All the details for the potions and poisons are based on having all the listed alchemy perks, Alchemy at 100 and a set of crafting gear.

Potion of Fortify Health

Ingredients Blue Mountain Flower, Lavender & Wheat
Effects Fortify Health Fortifies health by 170 points for 60 seconds
Restore Health Restores 266 points of health
Fortify Conjuration Conjuration spells last 213% longer for 60 seconds

All of the ingredients can be found in or around Whiterun.


Potion of Regenerate Health

Ingredients Canis Root, Juniper Berries & Namira's Rot
Effects Fortify Health Regeneration Health regenerates 213% faster for 300 seconds
Fortfiy Archery Bows do 170% more damage for 60 seconds

Canis Root is found on the opposite side of the river to Solitude and you’ll need 4 as you can get 2 from Arcadia’s Cauldron for free if you give her the Frost Salts from Farengar and there’s one in the secret lab at the farm. Gather 3 Namira’s Rot from White River Watch to the east of Whiterun. You’ll have to kill 6 bandits to get far enough in to get them. There are 6 Namira’s Rot in Reachwater Rock near Markarth. Juniper Berries are around Markarth.


Poison of Frenzy

Ingredients Blisterwort & Fly Amanita
Effects Frenzy Creatures and people up to level 43 will attack anything nearby for 10 seconds

At least 3 Blisterwort are for sale by the bartender in Sleeping Giant Inn at Riverwood. All the Fly Amanita you need are in Riverwood with 2 on the bit of land with the sawmill.


Potion of Fortify Enchanting

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Stoneflower Petals & Snowberries
Effects Fortify Enchanting 85% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Stoneflower Petals are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Snowberries are abundant near Windhelm.


Potion of Fortify Smithing

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Gold Kanet & Glowing Mushrooms
Effects Fortify Smithing 213% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Gold Kanet are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Glowing Mushrooms are in Falmer caves.
