Dragon Knight

Nord - Greatsword - Light - Barbarian

Background

These skillful masters-at-arms use the ancient Akaviri martial arts tradition of battle-spirit, and wield fearsome magic that pounds, shatters and physically alters the world around them.


Weapons

A steel greatsword as soon as you can. Then progressively better greatswords as Smithing perks are unlocked. The final weapon is a Dragonbone Greatsword.


Armor

Craft a set of leather scout armor as soon as you can and then get progressively better light armor as smithing perks are unlocked. There’s a set of Scaled Armor, Boots and Gauntlets to the south east of Gjukar’s Monument. Grab these when you have unlocked Goldenhills Plantation as it’s an immediate upgrade. There’s a few mudcrabs but with a two-handed weapon you can attack them while they remain out of range.

The final gear is a Orcish Scaled Helmet, Studded Dragonscale Armor, Fur Boots and Fur Gauntlets. An Amulet of Talos is also used to reduce shout cooldown.

The Orcish Scaled Helmet can be acquired from a quest started by reading the guards Dossier in Mitveil Keep Barrack in Riften. This gets you ful set of Orcish Scaled gear.

As you escape Helgen make sure you loot the Fur Boots and Gauntlets that can be can be found on any Stormcloak.

Read the Crimson Dirks v4 in Candlehearth Hall in Windhelm to start the quest for the Studded Dragonscale Armor. There’s a Shrine of Akatosh on the top of a mountain north of Rorikstead that has a piece of dragonscale as an offering. You can save this until you have your crafting skills maxed and then temper the armour. This allows you to have it fully upgraded without unlocking dragons.

An Amulet of Talos can be found on the battlements of Fort Dawnguard and can be taken at any level. Once you enter the Fort take 2 right turns and then go up the stairs.


Spells

Alteration for utility spells, Destruction for Flame Cloak and Restoration for heals.


Standing Stones.

Use the Atronach Stone for 50% spell absorption, 50 Magicka but -50% Magicka regeneration.


Shrines

Use a shrine of Talos for the 20% shout cooldown reduction.


Shouts

Dragon Aspect (Strength – Armor – Wyrm)

Location: Raven Rock Mine, Temple of Miraak, Apocrypha (use Waking Dreams Black Book again)

For 5 minutes deal 25% extra damage with power attacks, +125 points of armour, +25% fire and frost resistance, shouts are stronger and have a 20% cooldown reduction.

Unrelenting Force (Force - Balance - Push)

Location: Just follow the main story quests.

Can be used to stagger enemies but never needed it as the sabre does this.

Whirlwind Sprint (Whirlwind - Fury - Tempest)

Location: Dead Men’s Respite, Volskygge, High Hrothgar (The Way of the Voice)

Use to reach otherwise inaccessible places and to quickly evade attacks or catch up with fleeing enemies.


Character Creation

Female Nord

I picked Nord for this build due to the boost in combat skills such as Two-handed, Light Armor and Smithing. Frost resistance also helps on any melee build.

Pick female as the sex for your character as there are more male humanoids than females to fight in Skyrim so the 10% damage bonus against the opposite sex from Agent of Dibella gets more use. All Dwemer Automatons count as Male.

Alteration

Spell Level Description
Candlelight Novice Creates a hovering light that lasts for 60 seconds
Detect Life Adept Nearby living creatures, but not undead, machines or daedra, can be seen through walls
Telekinesis Adept Can pull an object to you from distance. Add it to your inventory or throw it
Waterbreathing Adept Can breathe under water for 60 seconds. Stand in water and cast to level Alteration.

From the Bow of Shadows quest that you get from the steward in Dragonsreach you can get the Detect Life spell book at the stables once you have read the ledger in Acradia's Cauldron. Cast this in the market during the day to level Alteration.


Conjuration

Spell Level Description
Soul Trap Apprentice If a target dies within 60 seconds, fills a soul gem.

Soul Trap is a good way to level conjuration. Just find a baby mudcrab and then spam the spell.


Destruction

Spell Level Description
Flames Novice A gout of fire inflicting a base damage of 8 points of fire damage per second.
Flame Cloak Adept For 60 seconds opponents in melee range take 8 points of fire damage per second. Targets on fire take extra damage

Use Unbounded Freezing and fast travelling to level Destruction. The spellbook can be found in Hob's Fall Cave.


Illusion

Spell Level Description
Courage Novice Target won't flee for 60 seconds, and gets some extra health and stamina.

Courage can be used to level illusion by casting it at an NPC.


Restoration

Spell Level Description
Healing Novice Heals the caster 10 points per second
Fast Healing Apprentice Heals caster by 50 points
Close Wounds Adept Heals caster by 100 points
Grand Healing Expert Heals everyone close to the caster 200 points. Does not affect atronachs, machines or undead

Restoration is used for emergency healing in combat. Use Grand Healing to replenish both Health and Stamina.

The effects listed below are based upon 100 Enchanting skill, all the enchanting perks in the build and with a set of enchanted crafting gear. Read my guide on making crafting gear if you are not familiar with it.

With the Sallowed Regent Black Book the magnitude of all enchantments can be increased. Please note that Black Books can only be used on Solstheim.

The magnitude of the enchantments can be further increased by equipping 4 pieces of Azhidal's gear.

All the details for the potions and poisons are based on having all the listed alchemy perks, Alchemy at 100 and a set of crafting gear.

Potion of Fortify Health

You can get all the Blue Mountain Flowers you need in Whiterun. The two farms to the east of Whiterun also get you all the Wheat you need.

Fly Amanita and Dragon's Tongue can be found at Kynesgrove, which is just to the south of Windhelm. Fly Amanita are numerous in the mine there as well. There’s a lot of Scaly Pholiota to the south of Ivarstead. There's a path to Ivarstead through the mountains from Helgen.


Potion of Fortify Enchanting

Effects Fortify Enchanting 85% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Stoneflower Petals are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Snowberries are abundant near Windhelm.

Effects Fortify Smithing 213% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Gold Kanet are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Glowing Mushrooms are in Falmer caves.
